Having another person growing in your womb is out of the normal for your body, albeit wonderfully natural. It’s no surprise then that there’s seemingly a storm of hormonal changes going on. The difference manifests in everything from your emotions, to your intelligence, to your health, and, obviously, to your looks.
You hear about women glowing with inner light and joy when expecting, and this is somehow upsetting. Other women seem to carry their pregnancy really well, but you just feel uncomfortable and unattractive. At the same time, you’re concerned that your usual beauty products and routines might have a negative effect on the baby.
Self-Care Musts During Pregnancy
Many pregnant women tend to feel that beauty has to momentarily take the back seat in order for comfort and the baby’s well-being to take priority. This is perfectly understandable, but there’s really no need to ignore your looks completely, especially if feeling unattractive makes you miserable.
You can be comfortable and safe while also looking out for your physical appearance. What are some of the things you can do to keep your looks despite the “ravages” of pregnancy?
1. Eat well.
This is the number one advice for the mother-to-be. It’s not synonymous to “eat a lot.” Emphasis should be put on the nutrients you consume, although attention should also be given to what your body is craving.
Make sure that you consume foods rich in the recommended nutrients such as the omega oils, vitamins A, C, and E, folate, iron, etc. Many of them also contribute to the health of your skin, which has a huge influence on your looks. In effect, eating right is important for both internal and external care.
2. Hydrate regularly.
You might be tempted to drink less since your bladder has become quite overactive, but your body needs plenty of fluids (water, particularly). Your organs have a bigger demand for water, drawing it from your skin cells so that your skin ends up looking dull and dry. That’s why you need to drink lots of water – two liters at least – to keep your skin supple and healthy-looking.
3. Get plenty of restful sleep.
This will get harder as your tummy gets bigger, but try to get a good night’s sleep. Naps are also golden. You need to take rest seriously to fight pregnancy fatigue. Even when you’re not doing anything, your body is straining with extra weight, so your exhaustion is understandable. To avoid looking tired with unbecoming dark circles, get ample sleep.
4. Exercise moderately but regularly.
Get the go-ahead from your doctor first, but most pregnant women are encouraged to keep their bodies active even if they’d much rather just lounge. You might not be able to do anything about your belly, but you can still keep the rest of your body toned. Walking and swimming are the exercises usually recommended.
5. Use safe and natural beauty products.
While going au naturel with your face is also okay, you have to realize that there are probably more things you might want to cover up. Your skin might get blotchy. You could develop acne. Your nose might widen. You can still conceal, contour, and enhance as long as you use safe products.
The same goes for basic hygiene involving soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, etc. Go for organic products if you can.
6. Stay stylish.
Are you tempted to wear a muumuu at all times? Your comfort is important, but prioritizing it doesn’t have to at the expense of your style. Fortunately, there are lots of options nowadays for fashionable maternity wear. If you’re worried about the expense, choose clothes that you can continue wearing even after pregnancy. You can also buy from thrift shops and consignment stores.
Expecting and Pretty
Pregnancy can be a difficult and crucial time. It seems silly to fret over your looks, but if you’re feeling happy and good about yourself, then all the better for you and your baby.
