8 Useful Fashion Tips to Get You Through Your First Day of College

January 03, 2018

This isn’t high school anymore, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to think about your first day of college in advance. You don’t want to go too big and set yourself up for a semester of unrealistic expectations, but then you don’t want to set the bar so low that people assume you’re a slob. Your outfit needs to be on trend, but comfortable enough to facilitate a day of learning.

Don’t worry, though, this isn’t like the first day of high school when you fret and worry about what brand of shoes and backpack to wear. This is college, you’re an adult now and the world is your oyster. You can really wear whatever you like, but that doesn’t mean that you should. With that in mind, check out these fashion tips.

1.      Blue Jeans

It’s a piece of fashion you can’t go wrong with because the look can be built up however you please. They never go out of style and you can wear them with a t-shirt and thongs, or boots and a tank top. Whatever floats your boat!

Another bonus? Most people own multiple pairs of blue jeans, which means you could probably get away with wearing the same pair for a solid week and no one would notice or think anything of it. Of course, you could just add a few pairs to your wardrobe instead. Don’t forget to get a variety of fits and they don’t all have to be blue either.

2.      Student Chic

If you’ve spent any amount of time on a college campus you’ve probably noticed that a lot of people don’t mind running around in joggers and a hoodie with their unwashed hair tied in a messy bun. However, you can re-create this look (and still look clean) by choosing leggings, trainers, and a baggy top. Finish the look with one piece of statement jewellery to elevate that style.

3.      Maxi Dress

It’s the perfect outfit to beat the heat. It’s comfortable to wear and will keep you breezy for a busy day of classes, it’s easy to accessorise and you’ll turn some heads while you’re at it. Whether you choose a floral number or go with a solid, you’ll be the envy of your classmates.

4.      The Skirt

The great thing about skirts is they don’t look quite as casual as most shorts and you can dress them up with accessories and jackets, too. Whether you prefer your skirts of the denim variety and you can’t take your eyes off the skater skirt, it’s a sure way to stay cool and comfortable.

Besides, there are so many different styles, prints, and varieties you could wear a skirt every day and still manage to create a new look.

5.      Rompers

The world is definitely still out on the RompHim (we’re just not ready for it, are we?), but rompers are still the way forward for the ladies. You can go off the shoulder or not, the choice is yours. Either way, the romper is comfortable, breezy, and a great way to show off your style for the start of the college year.

6.      BoHo Chic

What does this look like? Fringes, denim, breezy, embroidery and prints that stand out. Create your own Bohemian look. Think embroidered, floaty tops with cut off denim shorts and strappy sandals and then finish it with a big bag, dramatic jewellery, and don’t forget the sunnies.

7.      Basic

Why not choose a casual, knee-length swing dress? It’s certain to keep your comfortable, you will look amazing while wearing it and you haven’t set yourself up for a year of trying to outdo your own outfit choices. You can wear it with trainers, thongs, sandals, or even boots.

8.      Accessories

You can really show off your personal style with your accessories. Whether you want to stick to small, classic pieces or go bold with statement jewellery, this is your chance to let people know what your aesthetic is all about.

There will be days when you won’t have long to get ready, you will have slept in after a late night of studying and be in a serious hurry. So, make sure your accessories are easy to throw on before you run out the door. Now, don’t forget to shop for any makeup that is missing from your toolkit and keep your nails on point with polish that will take your outfits to the next level. Remember, you want some simple makeup looks, too, as we mentioned above… there will be days like that.
